As the population of the United States continues to become more ethnically diverse, Massage Therapists are working directly with clients from increasingly diverse backgrounds and within broad multicultural contexts. Work settings include various medical settings from private practice, physician's offices, spas, hospitals, and even travel destinations such as hotels and resorts. As a result, it is important that as health care providers, we become more familiar with the cultural differences of our clients and become more aware and sensitive to their perspective in order that we may avoid harm and provide the best care. We must ensure that each person we are in contact with is treated with respect and consideration.
This course will address multicultural issues in healthcare and in the practice of massage. Topics include concepts of race, ethnicity, diversity, culture, and the importance of cultural competency in healthcare. Issues in cross-cultural communication will be discussed including general pitfalls when working with various clients from diverse cultures. Resources to help therapists identify personal attitudes toward culture will be discussed, and the course will also consider how practitioners might works effectively with interpreters.
