Introduction to Human Trafficking

This introductory text-based online and home study course provides continuing education relative to the professional practice in healthcare, and encompasses a basic overview of human trafficking. Human trafficking, also known as 'trafficking in persons' or 'modern-day slavery', is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts. The coercion can be subtle, overt, physical, or psychological. The course will attempt to describe the realities of victims lives, including the physical, emotional, social, and sexual abuse they experience. Forms and scope of trafficking will be discussed as well as contributing factors, impact to victims, professional perspectives, interventions, and responses. Finally, implications for the healthcare practitioner with be presented, including the emotional toll that it takes upon practitioners and self-care considerations. The course ends with list of resources that includes organizations, agencies, books, films, and documentaries focusing on the issue of human trafficking.
